From the words of the wise 11 year old Birke Baehr (http://lifemorenatural.com/?p=1155) "you're either going to pay the farmer or the hospital". With this quote I took from this website shows that you're not necessarily paying more for your organically grown produce because you benefit from the long term health from clean, pesticide, and chemical free crops. However, with the efficiency of Industrial agriculture and the healthier, Eco-friendlier benefits of Sustainable agriculture, we need to combine the positive effects from both and combine them in to one type of universal agriculture. This type of agriculture will maximize the benefits of: Cheap and bountiful food, convenience for the consumer, and lastly consumer awareness, while minimizing the negative effects: Environmental damage and costs, health risks from chemicals and pesticides, and inhumane living conditions for livestock. With this type of agriculture we can feed the rising human population without giving up quality. With that being said, there are still many farmers out there that support sustainable agriculture. We as a community need to start purchasing organically grown produce so that the Industrial agriculturist's will realize the rising demand for organically grown crops and take up the practice for growing sustainable crops.

I agree completely with what you said Jeff. I was unaware of the issue of industrial agriculture and monoculture before I researched into this topic myself. It's almost scary to know how vulnerable a situation we're creating. Since most farms mass produce through techniques such as monoculture, our foods are always in threat of a mass disease. The fact that farmers are pressured into using only certain species makes the situation way worse. Just like the quote you posted, "You're either going to pay the farmer or the hospital". That is completely true. Sustainable agriculture is healthier for everyone, and this entire situation needs to become a more important issue.

ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with what you are saying in this blog. Industrial Agriculture is an unfortunate reality in our world. These Industrial farmers are not concerned about what they are doing to the earth and wildlife that live in it, and worse is that they realize the huge problems that they are causing and they are only greedy corporates that only care about the money. I agree that changing to sustainable foods would be way better for your health and the environment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you wrote in your blog. Sustainable agriculture is so much better than industrial agriculture. With industrial agriculture they are just mass producing products which is not healthy for our bodies and environment. The sustainable agriculture farmers are also trying to take care of the environment while they are producing food for the markets and grocery stores. I also like the quote you used in your blog
